Grateful Dredd

In a 1978 Pacifica Radio interview Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead cited the British weekly comic 2000AD as his favourite reading material, specifically the newly introduced character Judge Dredd. John Wagner's Judge Dredd storylines heavily satirised American culture, with a focus on authoritarianism, capitalism and police brutality. Situated in the dystopian future city of Mega-City One, which covers most of the east coast of North America, the highbrow writing and adult themes appealed to Garcia’s opinion of US politics and how the country was run.
